OBITUARYS

RAY WHITTAKER

It is with great sadness that the Wolverhampton Musical Comedy Company reports the death of long standing member Ray Whittaker. Ray was a stalwart of many shows at the Grand Theatre and at the Summer Show Supper Concerts. Ray, in the guise of Father Christmas was a great favourite every year at the Childrens' party. For years Ray was compere of the after show parties and we all have happy memories of his shaggy dog stories and of him leading the Company in singing "our song" "We'll meet again".

JEANETTE FROST 1927 - 2004

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our President, Mrs Jeanette Frost at the age of 77 years. She suffered very bravely for a very long time, in hospital, visited daily by Bob, past Chairman, who was her husband for 51 years. Both Bob and Jeanette were active members for many years. Later they were joined by their children and two grandchildren. In fact for one show we had eight of the family on or backstage!

Jeanette joined the company as a dancer, later to become secretary, and finally President. She was a very loyal member, a top ticket seller and very efficient for all of her 47 years membership, missing only when she had her children. Just over a year ago we had her company at rehearsal, in her wheelchair, smiling, singing and clapping along to the music.

As chorus mistress and joint producer of the summer shows, she was invaluable and we will miss her. I remember when she and I were "strutting our stuff" as Hot Box Girls and Fandango Girls. Such happy days. To a much loved member we close our curtain.

Olwen Rowley.

AVRIL TOPHAM 1937 – 2002

This is a tribute to and a celebration of the amateur theatrical life of Averil Topham who joined Wolverhampton Musical Comedy Company in the early 60's as a talented dancer, having trained from an early age in Yorkshire before moving to the Midlands in her teens. She lived for dancing, she had a wonderful memory for dance steps and routines and she always knew the words. Her willingness to help others was a tremendous asset to the Company. Both major and minor parts came along over the years and she gave full support to Muscom's summer shows. Averil also belonged to South Staffs Musical Theatre Company and Old Fallings Players Amateur Operatic Society. Averil maintained a youthful vigour on stage; she was truly a tour de force. You are sadly missed but fondly remembered Averil.
